| Abstract | An approach to reading instruction utilizing communicative styles from the black community is suggested by the metatheoretical framework outlined in this essay. The social class constructs, language deficit models, case histories, surrealistic rhetoric and lyrical quality of black discourse can be conceptualized within the context of the following constructs: "Frame of mind," or a total view of language from a cultural standpoint; "Context," or the understanding of symbol development; "Structure," including lyrical quality, vocal artifact, and indirection; "Delivery," characterized generally by the extemporaneous mode; and "Implications," exploring the ramifications of the comprehensive metatheory for the art of teaching reading to black children.
